Question:
If you drive at speed in very wet conditions, your steering may suddenly feel ‘light’. This means that the tyres have lifted off the surface of the road and are skating on the surface of the water. This is known as aquaplaning. Reduce speed by easing off the accelerator, but don’t brake until your steering returns to normal.
Aquaplaning, also known as hydroplaning, is a phenomenon that affects drivers when their tires lose traction with the road due to water accumulation. It can occur in wet weather conditions and on roads that have been recently treated with oil or other slippery substances. When aquaplaning occurs the vehicle’s tires are unable to grip the road surface and it begins to slide across it instead of rolling over it like normal. This causes a loss of control for the driver as they can no longer steer or brake effectively which could lead to an accident if not corrected quickly enough by reducing speed drastically or taking evasive action such as swerving into another lane.
The main cause of aquaplanning is excessive speed combined with standing water on roads from rain, melted snow etc., however there are several contributing factors including worn out tire treads and incorrect tire pressure which reduces its ability to disperse water away from its contact patch correctly leading up more buildup between them and the road surface increasing chances for aquaplanning even further at lower speeds than usual . Additionally improperly inflated tires will increase resistance against steering input making any corrective action much harder while driving through standing waters
To avoid getting caught off guard by this dangerous situation drivers should always take extra precautions when driving in wet conditions such as maintaining slower speeds than usual , checking their tire pressure regularly , replacing old worn out tyres promptly ,and avoiding puddles where possible so they don't end up losing control over their vehicles unexpectedly .

Helping my daughter with the theory side of the test. Only wish we’d found it earlier on! Even I’m learning/getting reminded of what things mean again!
