Question:

To correct a rear-wheel skid you should _________.

A Steer into it.
explanation

Prevention is better than cure, so it’s important that you take every precaution to avoid a skid from starting. If you feel the rear wheels of your vehicle beginning to skid, try to steer in the same direction to recover control. Don’t brake suddenly – this will only make the situation worse.

Related Information

Most of us have been in situations when we didn't feel in control of our vehicles, but worryingly, few drivers know what to do during a skid to potentially avoid a collision.

Although each skid is unique, the following guidelines can help you regain control:

Rear Wheel Skid (oversteer)

When the rear wheels lose traction, the car will swing out to the outside of the turn. This skid can occur on a bend or corner with a rear wheel, front wheel, or four wheel drive vehicle, but the correction is the same. Decelerate or declutch* and steer in the direction of the skid as soon as you felt oversteer.

The skidding tyres will not regain grip until their rotational speed matches the road speed. When the tyres reach road speed, grip is recovered.

Return to the desired course after recovering grip. If the speed is too high, there may be insufficient room to retake control.

*Declutching is not permitted in automobiles equipped with traction control.

Helping my daughter with the theory side of the test. Only wish we’d found it earlier on! Even I’m learning/getting reminded of what things mean again!
