A Call the fire brigade.

If you suspect a fire in the engine compartment you should pull up as safely and as quickly as possible. DO NOT open the bonnet as this will fuel the fire further. Get any passengers out of the vehicle and dial 999 immediately to contact the fire brigade.

Given that car fires don't occur as regularly as car accidents, you will probably be shocked and terrified if one does. However, a car fire can be just as devastating, so it's important to know what to do. When a car fire starts, you must act fast to prevent being overpowered by smoke and unable to escape. As vehicle fires spread quickly, take the following actions if one occurs:

- Pull over right away and turn off the engine to stop the flow of highly flammable fuel.

- Get out of the vehicle as quickly as you can, along with the other passengers.

- Do not go back to the car to retrieve items; an explosion could occur at any time.

- If you have forgotten your phone in the car, dial 999 or ask a passing driver to contact the emergency services for you.

- While you wait for assistance, be mindful of your surroundings. You may have stopped next to a busy roadside, and it's crucial that you keep clear of moving traffic. If you have children with you, be extra watchful of them.

If you don't have the proper fire extinguisher but still try to put out the fire yourself, it could end up doing more harm than good. If the car's hood is opened, the fire will be fueled by more air reaching the flames. You should avoid dousing the flames with water since it could wash the petrol that is burning away and into other areas, where it will cause more problems. If you must put out the fire urgently but lack the necessary fire extinguisher, earth and sand are can help.
