As the registered keeper of a vehicle it is up to you to inform DVLA (DVA in Northern Ireland) of any changes in your vehicle or personal details, for example, change of name or address. You do this by completing the relevant section of the Registration Certificate and sending it to them.

If the original log book (V5C) has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed by you or your insurance provider, you must get a new one. If you don't need to make any changes to the V5C, you can get a duplicate online. The V5C will be mailed to the address on record with the DVLA.
Other cases in which you need to obtain a V5C include:
- Your name or address have changed.
- The details of the vehicle have changed.
- You recently bought, sold, or transferred a vehicle.
- You didn't receive a V5C with your new vehicle.
To apply for a duplicate V5C online, you must be the registered keeper on the V5C. Normally, the service costs £25. Your V5C will typically arrive in 5 business days. If it's been two weeks after you applied and you still haven't gotten your V5C, get in touch with the DVLA. You cannot use this service if:
- You must update any of your information.
- You do not have the vehicle in your possession.
- You have previously sent your V5C to the DVLA for changes to be made.
- Your vehicle is registered via the DVLA fleet scheme.
- Your vehicle is registered abroad.
If you are the registered keeper on the damaged or missing V5C and none of your personal information or that of your car has changed, you can apply over the phone. Your V5C will typically be sent to you in 4 weeks. If 4 weeks have passed since your application and you still have not got your V5C, get in touch with the DVLA.
